ABOUT

Justin is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and sound producer who has worked extensively in contemporary sound art, popular, and world music. He is interested in participatory and open form works at the intersection of cultural identities and contemporary sound production.

 

He has worked in theatre, screen and festivals with diverse audiences and participants. His most recent work include sound design for The Village Fire Garden with Uncle Ron Murray, music direction of  the “Kulture-All Makaan” 2021 Castlemaine State Festival/Punctum, “Sound Capsule” and “Wayfinders” (Artplay 2021) and “Sonic Labyrinth” co-created with Aviva Endean and presented at the 2019 Castlemaine State Festival and 2019 Melbourne Fringe Festival and was nominated for a Green Room Award (2020).

Since graduating from the VCA in 2001 as a percussionist, Justin has enjoyed performing all over Australia and the World at major festivals and venues, striving to push musical boundaries with groups such as ARIA award winning Zulya and the Children of the Underground, Speak Percussion, Polyglot Theatre, The Cumbia Cosmonauts, Emma Donovan and The Putbacks, D.D.Dumbo, Umlaut (Bar McKinnon) and The Wikimen. 
 
He has been involved in the development and performance of many Polyglot Theatre shows including ‘Mungari Wilcha’ with the Tjanpi Weavers (2019), ‘Tangled’ (2012-19) and ‘Sticky Maze’(2015). He has also helped develop a variety of other theatrical and interactive projects and performances including ‘Sea Sounds’ (Dan Witton 2018, Melbourne Recital Centre) ‘Café Scheherezade ’(2011) produced by 45 Downstairs,  The West Side Circuses Fringe show, ‘The Albatross’, ‘Exit’ with Tania Bosak and the Barefoot Orchestra (45 Downstairs 2013).
 
His own compositions and sound production have featured on television and in documentaries  including ‘Heart’ by Big and Little Films/ABC, winner of Best Documentary at MIFF 2008, ‘Sisters and Pearls’ and ‘Halal Mate’ by Rebel Films/SBS, and animations such as ‘Shhh’ directed by Adam Robb and produced by the VCA, winner of an AFI for best animation 2002. 
 
In his local community of Castlemaine, he was musical director for opening shows of the 2009 and 2011 and 2013 Castlemaine State Festival incorporating a diverse array of community performers from diverse backgrounds as well as facilitating community music jams and a street parade in the 2011 festival.  He worked with The Village Festival in numerous musical ensembles including writing a special composition with students for their 2018 Fire Event. His passion is for creating surprising contexts for people to discover sound and music and to explore the boundaries of musical expression and experience for as diverse an audience as possible
